The Winter Olympic Games kicked off last night with the Opening Ceremony in PyeongChang, South Korea. This year the United States will be represented by 244 athletes as they compete in 97 of 102 available events. It’s the largest delegation ever sent by the United States to an Olympic event.
Time has proven that the Olympic Games have the power to unite nations from within. Take the 1980 Winter Games at Lake Placid for example. The United States was going through a particularly difficult time. Somehow, watching one underdog hockey team tumble a dynasty, pulled this country through war and political turmoil. Watching this team gave us a reason to hope for better. It was the number one sports moment of the 20th century for a reason!
We, as Americans, are at another all time low. There are many issues facing our country at this time. Maybe, just maybe, we can find a reason to pull together as a country again. And maybe, that reason can be supporting our United States athletes as they compete head to head with ninety other countries. I encourage all of you to watch as much of the games as possible (yes, a radio girl is promoting TV). Maybe, we will find our hope again.
