Throughout all of life’s ups and downs, one thing in my life has always been constant. The love I have for our community. Butte is, in my opinion, the best place I could grown up. It instilled in me, and in all of us, an indomitable spirit, one that resists giving up, even when times are difficult. We’ve had some difficult times lately. While we were promised a fair clean up of the Superfund site that sits within our city limits, we have yet to see that come to pass. In fact, our city has been waiting for that cleanup for 20 years.
The truth is, we might never see that reality. There is a good chance that without proof of community interest and support, the EPA might choose to enforce a unilateral decision. What does that mean?
Basically, the unilateral decision would decide what type of cleanup and restoration Butte receives. It cannot be contested, negotiated, or altered by the State of Montana or ARCO/BP. Most importantly, it doesn’t allow Butte-Silver Bow, or the people of Butte to be heard. We deserve a seat at the table, and we deserve a timely, properly cleaned up and RESTORED creek.
